What is shatter made of?

Specifically, shatter is a highly powerful cannabis concentrate that can contain up to 90% THC.

It is a solid substance with an appearance similar to glass, it is generally amber colored although it can also be a dark oily yellow color.

Shatter’s name is literal, as it needs to be broken up to be consumed either in a joint or a pipe, although it is usually enjoyed in a bong, a rig, or a water pipe.

Shatter is quite well known among those who are into their cannabis concentrates, although it is less popular among more traditional marijuana fans.

With that in mind, those cannabis afficionados may know that in 2024 we are celebrating Smoking Paper’s centenary year. We have been making papers and other products and accessories for 100 years. However, for the first 70 of those years, we had never heard of the term “shatter”.

This type of cannabis concentrate first became popular during the 90s. We know this was a while ago now, but it is still relatively recent when compared to other types of cannabis strains or concentrates.

What types of shatter are there?

The most well-known types of shatter are:

• BHO Shatter: this is the most well-known of all, and one of the cannabis substances with the highest THC concentrate.
• CBD Shatter: This has no THC but the effects are instant and noticeable, just like medicinal cannabis. It is most commonly consumed in teas or in bongs.

How to prepare shatter

Now you know what shatter is, you need to know how to prepare it. However, this process is a delicate and risky one, so we do recommend you seek professional help, especially in regard to its extraction.

Shatter is prepared as follows:

1. The raw material is selected, this may be from the flowers, cuttings, or any other part of a plant that is rich in trichomes.
2. Start extracting, be it in a tube or a specific extraction chamber with a solvent (like butane). This step aims to extract the compounds we want from the plant.
3. The remaining material is a liquid that contains cannabinoids and other parts of the plant. It must be filtered into a container.
4. The waste solvent is then flushed out. This can be done using a shallow tray at a temperature of around 40°C with controlled pressure, meaning vacuum packed. This way you remove the butane or solvents you have used. As a result of this process the cannabinoids crystalize.
5. Finally, it is scraped and the shatter is ready. It usually has a translucent, glass-like appearance.
