Cannabis-Anbau: So bekämpfst du Weiße Fliegen

Guides

When producing marijuana you have to keep an eye on multiple factors. One of the most critical are the possible pests that can attack our plants. Of all of these, whitefly is the most dangerous.

Whitefly on marijuana plants

Whitefly is a light colored species of insect that belongs to the Hemiptera family.

What is the biggest issue with whitefly? Well they reproduce like rabbits! In just 12 days they can lay and hatch 150 eggs.

They are capable of destroying a crop and making it impossible to recover. So prevention is key, but if we are unable to do so we can also get rid of them by acting quickly and efficiently.

To make sure it’s not too late, look out for clear signs that whitefly may be attacking your crop:

  • The leaves will turn yellow, as their main nutrients are from the plant’s salvia.
  • Whitefly leaves a liquid on the leaves and stalks that soon turns into mold.
  • The plants’ defenses are compromised meaning they are more vulnerable to all kinds of viruses and diseases.

As you can see, whitefly is able to attach itself to plants, especially to stalks and leaves. A daily check of your plants will help you to control this and to detect the first signs of any symptoms that this insect may cause.

How to get rid of whitefly from your marijuana plants

If you want to know how to get rid of the whitefly from your marijuana plants, below we are going to leave you with some tips of how to do so:

Home remedies

When it comes to getting rid of pests we need to get down to work, which is why we recommend these home remedies for you to try:

  • Remove the infected leaves to reduce the infestation from spreading further and to prevent other leaves and stalks from being infected.
  • Wash the leaves if you think you can save them. Use water and neem oil for around 20 days.
  • Fight whitefly with its natural predators! Ladybugs and other mites prey on these bugs so they can be a real ally when it comes to stopping the infestation.
  • Alternatively, you can opt for natural insecticides. They will not just get rid of the whitefly; they will also not damage the plants as they contain no artificial additives.

Bear in mind that home remedies against whitefly can be effective, but at times only partially. If you do not completely eradicate the insect and any possible eggs it has laid, the same problem is likely to arise within a few days.

What temperature does whitefly die at?

Whitefly is happiest in temperate climates, so when things get a little extreme it can make them uncomfortable and even stamp them out completely.

When it comes to the cold, their activity and reproduction capacity starts to reduce at under 10°C, meaning they are easier to control.

However, if you want to completely get rid of them, choose heat. Any temperature above 32°C increases their mortality rate.

But remember, whichever option you go for, you must protect your plants as well, as extreme temperatures can affect their growth cycles.
