Almost everyone has heard of the term “marijuana bud”. A lot of people also claim to recognize a bud straight away and to have firsthand knowledge of this key element of a cannabis plant.

But the reality is that it is highly complex! So much so, that there is always a lot of confusion when it comes to distinguishing a marijuana bud from the plant’s flowers, their structure, or even what types of buds exist.

What are Marijuana Buds?

Let’s get back to basics, what are marijuana buds?: they are inflorescences produced by female marijuana plants.

The parts of a marijuana bud are as follows:

• Calyxes: these are where the reproductive organs of marijuana plants are located along with some thick leaves that protect them.
• Stigmas: these are the reproductive organs of marijuana plants that, if pollinated, form a seed.
• Bracts: these are modified leaves of the reproductive organs that form the main structure of a bud.
• Main stem: the base of the bud that joins the calyxes and bracts to the rest of the plant.

How are they Produced?

During the flowering stage, the marijuana plant starts to produce small flower structures. The clustering of these flowering structures is what is known as a bud.

They are produced at the tips of the plant’s branches and as they grow they become denser and have more resin, which is where the cannabinoids and terpenes are concentrated.

Types of Marijuana Bud:

The types of marijuana buds are defined based on different classifications.

Types of marijuana buds according to strain

• Sativa buds: large and fluffy.
• Indica buds: smaller and compact.

Types of marijuana buds according to density

• Dense buds: high density level (more valuable).
• Airy buds: low level of density (less valuable).

Types of marijuana buds according to color

• Green buds: these are the most standard type due to the presence of chlorophyll.
• Purple buds: due to a flavonoid pigment called anthocyanin.
• White buds: due to having immature stigmas and a lot of trichomes.
• Orange buds: as they are at an advanced stage of ripening.

Types of marijuana buds according to structure

• Compact buds: this are highly compressed with a high concentration of trichomes.
• Fluffy buds: lighter, but with less cannabinoids.

Types of marijuana buds according to bud sites

• Main cola buds: produced at the top of the plant or on the main branches. They are usually large and dense. 
• Secondary branch buds: Smaller but of high quality due to their concentration of trichomes.

When do Marijuana Buds Start to Appear?

Marijuana buds begin to emerge during the flowering stage of the plant, which can change depending on where the crop is grown:

• Northern hemisphere: during July and August.
• Southern hemisphere: during November and December.
