Haschisch: Ein Überblick über Ursprung, Arten und Wirkungen

Glossary

Cannabis is a broad subject matter. So much so that even some of its derivatives have gained their own fame and are almost as well-known as the plant itself. That is precisely the case with hash.

Below, we provide more details about this product, where it is actually from, the different types of hash, and the eternal question of what its effects are?

What is hash?

Hash is a form of cannabis concentrate which in reality comes from kief or resin. In practical terms, hash could be considered as pure resin.

One of the reasons why hash has become so well-known is that the resins used to make it have very high levels of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), meaning that they also offer significant effects to those who consume it.

Where is hash from?

This year we are celebrating the centenary year of Smoking Paper. One hundred years of making rolling papers for people all over the world, in addition to other products. For us it is both a proud and incredible milestone.

But hash has already celebrated several centenaries. It has an ancient and somewhat mysterious past, but one thing for sure is that it is from North Africa.

The Persians and Ancient Egyptians already used hash for medicinal and spiritual purposes. However, it was not seen in Europe until the 19th Century, and in the United States until the mid-20th Century.

It is essentially made from cannabis resin. First the resin is separated from the leaves and then it is filtered. The small grains that form are then ground into a powder. This is molded and put into brown colored blocks, which is the hash that we know as consumers.

This is the traditional process. Nowadays, these steps are done using innovative techniques which streamline production and allow for different types of hash to be made in a relatively short period of time.

What types of hash are there?

There are several different types of hash. This is a list of the most common:

  • Butane Hash Oil (BHO), also known as Butane Honey Oil.
  • Bubble Hash, also known as Ice Water Hash.
  • Budder.
  • Wax.
  • Crumble.
  • Dry Sift Hash.
  • Rosin.
  • Shatter.

Main effects

Many people ask about the effects of hash. Due to its high THC content, it can cause some strong psychotropic effects.

Any negative effects are also enhanced, with the most common being eye irritation, a dry mouth, or poor coordination.

Hash is double the trouble. On the one hand, it can be addictive for those who consume it. On the other, there is a real risk of suffering more serious negative effects, ranging from anxiety to sensory distortions, memory loss, and difficulties concentrating, etc.

However, the higher concentrate of THC makes the product more effective when combating pain. That is why people with chronic pain opt for hash over cannabis, including those who suffer from neuropathic pain, which affects the nervous system.
